When a vacancy occurs on a board of education, the board is required by law to appoint a person to fill the vacancy within 60 days. Should the board not act, the president of the board makes the appointment. Whether the appointee serves for the remainder of the unexpired term or until the next, or the next succeeding election depends on the number of days until the next regular biennial election and the number of years left in the unexpired term.
