Miami Yoder Historical Facts
- In 1907 Pearl Reed’s family came here from Miami, Oklahoma and homesteaded the land where present day Miami School is located. In 1908, they donated the land on which the school was to be built. The first one-room school was built in 1908. In 1915 a new two-story school was built approximately 1/4 mile north of the old school.
- A school was also located in Yoder. The first meeting of the District was May, 1918. There were many one-room schools in the area, and discussions began as early as 1920 regarding consolidation of the schools to the Miami site.
- In 1927, the school was hit by lightning and burned. Classes were held in a church in “old” Rush (on Book Road).
- On May 7, 1928, a bond was passed for the construction of a new school. That school was completed in 1930.
- August 1930: Columbine School District 47 met to consider sending the entire school to Miami. In August of 1951, Kanza #31 and Lincoln Valley #24 decided to send pupils to Miami and pay tuition. In October 1951, the new district was numbered 60.
- In July 1958, there was a public bond notice for the purpose of erecting and furnishing a school building. In 1960, the gymnasium was added and Yoder School joined Miami.
- Teacherages were moved onto the site in 1959. On July 31st, 1961, the Sunnyside School house was purchased and moved to the Miami site to be used as a tool shed and shop.
- A new cafeteria was built in 1979, replacing the old one (1922).
- In April 1997, construction began on the new elementary wing. This addition consisted of eleven classrooms and two locker rooms.
- In November, 2007, bond was passed for the construction of a new high school.
- December 2008: Students were able to occupy six new classrooms & a new gym.
- In August 2009, the school district was awarded a $17.6 million grant for more construction.
